Civil Society Development in Syria 2017

Sets out the historical foundations of Syrian civil society, from the charitable associations of the nineteenth century through French occupation and Ba'ath Party consolidation, and documents the civic structures that emerged in the first years of the 2011 uprising, from Local Coordinating Committees to the women-led organisations and grassroots groups that sustained community life under extreme conditions.

This is the original research and lecture material I developed with Jan Jaap van Oosterzee of PAX, delivered at Radboud University in 2017 and 2018 for political science students and later adopted into the department's examination materials for the Syria context.
